Autumn Downpours? Stay Dry

As we say goodbye to the hot, dry summer, we're greeted by the chilly season, where all-day drizzles, heavy rain, fog, and strong winds are the norm. But work doesn’t wait for better weather. Here's how to dress to stay dry and comfortable, no matter the conditions.

Moisture and wind make it feel colder. Spending long hours in the cold isn’t just uncomfortable—it can lead to colds and extra strain on your heart and blood vessels. Cold temperatures also affect your work performance. And if you’re soaked to the bone, getting warm again is tough. That’s why waterproof and water-resistant clothing is a must for working outside in autumn.

Waterproof Materials

Waterproof Materials

For your outer layer (jacket and pants), look for materials that are both waterproof and breathable. A material’s waterproof rating is measured by its water column—the higher the number, the better it withstands water pressure. However, as waterproofing increases, breathability often decreases. This means that while you stay dry on the outside, you might end up sweating inside. So, what’s the right water column rating for a full day of rain? 10,000 mm is more than enough. Materials with this rating are typically both waterproof and breathable. These fabrics are either treated with special chemicals or feature a waterproof coating or membrane. Clothes with a membrane offer excellent water resistance, breathability, and durability, but they tend to be pricier.

In our selection, you’ll find waterproof jackets and pants made from modern materials. But in some cases—especially in farming, forestry, or fishing—you might need a classic raincoat. Longer than a jacket, a raincoat protects your legs from the rain too. We offer a variety of rain gear, from lightweight to heavy-duty raincoats, as well as rain sets with a water column rating of up to 13,000 mm. Not only do these keep you dry, but they’re also environmentally friendly, as they’re fully recyclable.

The Details Matter

The Details Matter

The material alone won’t guarantee you stay dry. It’s crucial that water doesn’t sneak in through weak spots like seams or zippers. Waterproof clothing should have seams reinforced with waterproof tape and water-resistant zippers. To be sure your gear is up to the task, look for the EN 343 standard – Protection Against Rain. Clothing that meets this standard is made from waterproof materials and won’t let water in through the seams or zippers, keeping you dry and comfortable even in heavy rain.

And Most Importantly, Dry Feet

And Most Importantly, Dry Feet

To complete your waterproof outfit, choose the right footwear. If your feet get wet while working, that cold, damp feeling will stick with you. In our range, you’ll find classic rubber boots, essential for foresters, fishermen, and farmers, as well as a wide selection of work and safety shoes with water-resistant uppers made from natural leather combined with modern synthetic materials, like the HYDRATEC membrane. These shoes also offer great insulation, making them perfect for those chilly autumn days.
